Though you might expect a restaurant where the cooking is done by students (from the next door Westminster Kingsway College) to be a bit Russian roulette, we've never had a bad experience at The Vincent Rooms, and the prices are astoundingly low.

Only the advanced students - from the course that produced Ainsley Harriot and Jamie Oliver - are allowed near the kitchen, and the standard varies from decent to stratospheric, especially in the haute cuisine Escoffier Room.

The Brasserie Room is a plain canteen-style dining room, but there's nothing plain about the food, which comes from a long menu of imaginative Modern European dishes, reminiscent of one of London's posher gastropubs.

The Escoffier Room is aiming more at the Michelin starred end of the spectrum, and hits the heights impressively often.

The best value lunch in London.

For this year’s annual adventure weekend, the Master took her band of intrepid liverymen, their partners and friends to the middle of the Irish Sea for 3 days of Celtic history, Victorian transport and kippers.

The great Celtic god of the sea, Manannan, was not so welcoming with the weather unfortunately, giving us the rare opportunity to experience at least three of the four seasons the Isle enjoys, but neatly compressed into 72 hours.

Over the next two hours they gave us a fascinating insight into the workings of this ancient government, personally showing us around the three chambers - the House of Keys, the Legislative Council and the Tynwald Court - making the Tynwald the only operating tri-cameral parliament in the world.

Although the official activities were from Friday to Sunday evening, a number of liverymen took advantage of the opportunity to come to the Island and stayed an extra day or more either side of the weekend.

I also went to the Tax Advisers' civic and charity lunch at Armourers', had a working lunch with Paul and the Upper Warden to discuss committee makeup for the following year, attended a Livery education conference at Staple Inn (courtesy of the Actuaries) where we had some excellent talks and discussions about the different ways the livery can help schools and young people prepare for life.

food

Not many people have heard of the The Escoffier Room, a small fine dining restaurant situated inside Westminster Kingsway College which gives the catering students the opportunity to cook and serve paying customers.

It’s a small, lovely dining room (if not a little old-fashioned) which could have done with a bit of background musak to liven up the atmosphere.

The fillet of sole stuffed with a bouncy salmon and coriander mousse was cooked exquisitely and the overiding flavour of curry from the couscous was delicious.

The fillet of beef atop the crispest rosti you’re ever likely to find was exceptional; the flavour was the sort you want to keep on eating forever.

Fair enough you won’t have a perfect meal but you can’t help leaving with a big smile on your face – well we did anyway.
